My 2025 Vision — Authentically Me As I Go

Ah, the new year—that magical time when we vow to become entirely new people overnight. We make ambitious lists: lose 20 pounds, run a marathon, learn French, declutter our homes, start meditating, and maybe even master the art of sourdough bread. And then, by mid-January, we're left wondering why we're hiding from our vision board and eating cookies in our pajamas. Again.

A word cloud with "Yes" and "No."
Saying "No" is just as powerful and decisive as saying "Yes"!

So why does this happen? Because real life happens! And because most of us try to change too much at once, overwhelming ourselves with expectations that even a superhero would struggle to meet. But what if we approach resolutions differently—one step at a time, with a bit of grace, a little laughter, and a firm understanding that saying "No" is just as powerful and decisive as saying "Yes"?

A few years ago, I had a podcast titled "New Year, New You." At the time, I liked the idea of a new year with a new start. I don't want to be a 'new' me- just a few tweaks. Now, my vision for 2025 is New Year, Authentically Me. As I go, I plan to take all my successes and build on them while making shifts carefully and mindfully. How about You?

The Power of a Single Focus (Because Multitasking is Overrated)

Instead of a massive overhaul, let's embrace the beauty of simplicity. One small, meaningful change can create a ripple effect on our lives—without making us feel like we've signed up for an Olympic training program.

Consider these ideas:

  • Move a Little More (No Gym Membership Required!) – Instead of committing to an extreme workout plan that involves more spandex than your wardrobe allows, start small. Add an extra day of movement each week, extend your daily walk by ten minutes, or (my favorite) turn on music and dance in your kitchen like nobody's watching—except maybe your dog, who now thinks you've lost it. Or, if you're lucky, they join in on the fun!

  • Mindful Meals (Without Declaring War on Carbs) – Forget extreme diets that turn eating into a science experiment. Instead, commit to adding one more vegetable to your plate each day. Bonus points if you love to eat dark, bitter greens or kale (but no judgment if you don't).

  • Sleep Like a Queen (Without Counting Sheep) – Rather than attempting to become a morning person overnight (a true act of fiction for some of us), try easing into better sleep habits. Start by going to bed just 30 minutes earlier, perhaps after one less episode of that show you're binge-watching. (You know the one.)

The Positive Power of "No" (Because Boundaries Are Beautiful)

Resolutions aren't just about saying "Yes" to new habits and recognizing when to say "No" to things that drain your time, energy, or sanity. Let's practice:

  • "No" to Overcommitment – Just because you can do something doesn't mean you need to. If your schedule looks like a jigsaw puzzle on steroids, it's time to reclaim your time and protect your energy.

  • "No" to Perfectionism – That little voice telling you that if you can't do something perfectly, you shouldn't do it at all? Frankly, I am not fond of the word and don't find it helpful. Politely tell it to take a hike. Progress over perfection if we insist on dealing with perfection.

  • "No" to Guilt-Driven Obligations – If saying "Yes" makes you resentful instead of joyful, consider whether that's the best use of your precious time. Saying "No" to one thing means saying "Yes" to something that genuinely matters—like your peace of mind.

Are you unsure whether to say "Yes" or "No"? It can be helpful to take a moment and ask yourself if the answer brings you closer to your goal and action steps or further away. That can be a great way to check in with yourself to see if you are agreeing out of habit or intention AND a way to rearrange your schedule to potentially do both…helping someone else and taking care of yourself.

Self-Care: The Ultimate YES

At the heart of resolutions is self-care—not a guilt trip or an exhausting to-do list, but a commitment to your well-being. It's about creating space for curiosity, joy, growth, and even a little indulgence (because what's life without some lovely dark chocolate?).

Reflect and Take Action

So, here's your challenge: Pick ONE small, achievable goal. Just one. Say "Yes" to what lights you up and "No" to what doesn't serve you. And remember, it's okay if your New Year's resolution includes more naps and fewer unrealistic expectations.

Share Your Journey (Because We're in This Together!)

What resolutions are you saying "Yes" to this year? How will you use the power of "No" to protect your time and energy? Share your thoughts. We'd love to hear them! Let's tackle this year with curiosity, intention, humor, and maybe just a little less pressure to be anything other than authentically YOU.

Now, go forth and conquer; at least take a well-earned break before you do. Cheers to a new year filled with purpose, joy, and successful endeavors!
